The second annual Hays NAWIC Excellence Awards were held last week in Wellington. Over 200 people from around the country attended the celebration of women doing wonderful things across the construction sector. With 10 percent yearly growth rates predicted through to 2019 it is so important to encourage more women to work in construction and to highlight the successes of women already working in this exciting sector.
A very special woman received an accolade at the ceremony. Our very own Susy Pryde, Operations Manager at Johnstone Construction, got a 'Highly Commended' in the Excellence in Administration category. Susy's ability to analyse and translate legislation into practical tools and reporting on the ground for the site teams and her dedication to the training and development of not just Johnstone staff but their sub-contractors were singled out for special mention by the judges.
Susy was nominated by the whole team at Johnstone Construction, and she continued the family theme by bringing 2 very special guests with her to the awards - her husband Chris and son Sebastian. A reflection of the emphasis that Susy puts on the team, or her family, before herself.
Managing Director Hugh Johnstone was thrilled at the industry recognition for Susy - "I couldn't run the business without her and it is fantastic to have her contribution to not just us but the industry acknowledged alongside the many other talented women doing great things in the construction industry."
Another member of the wider Johnstone Construction family, Antonia Speight of Acuite Construction Intelligence, also received an award on the night. Antonia got a 'Special Merit' recognition for her contribution to the Professional Women category.
All the winners and finalists were hailed as “inspirational leaders who are passionate about changing the construction sector” by the judges. It was an impressive group of women and a real honour to hear their stories and we look forward to being a part of it next year!
